The 2007 ICJ Canada Annual Meeting will be held in Calgary on Monday, August 13 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Telus Convention Centre in Glen 202. The meeting will include an address by David Matas, the 2007 recipient of the Tarnopolsky Award, who will speak on “The right to counsel: an essential human right."
The talk will cover the benefits of counsel, the objections to recognition of the right to counsel, and the incidents of the right.
Following a short meeting of Council, the law firm of Fraser Milner Casgrain will once again generously host a reception at which ICJ members from across Canada can get acquainted and re-acquainted.
The Tarnopolsky Award will be presented by Justice Ian Binnie at the joint ICJ/Canadian Judges Forum meeting to be held from 9:15-10:45 in Macleod B. This year’s joint program will be on “Security in Our Courthouses and Courtrooms,” and the panel will consist of three experts in the field, including Francois Rolland, Chief Justice of the Quebec Superior Court, and Norman Inkster, former Commissioner of the RCMP. ICJ Canada’s representative will be Reid Morgan, ex-Director of CSIS and former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Please note that anyone may attend the ICJ Annual Meeting without preregistration, but in orderto attend the ICJ/CJF joint meeting, you must be registered either for the CBA Annual Meeting or for Judges’ Day. Day passes will be available at the registration desk.
