ICJ Canada Annual Meeting in Quebec City

The 2008 ICJ Canada Annual Meeting will be held on Monday, August 18, from 3:00 to 5:30 in Room 202 at the Convention Centre in Quebec City. This meeting marks the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Canadian Section of the International Commission of Jurists as Canada’s first human rights NGO focused on promoting and maintaining the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary on a global level. The meeting will include commemoration of ICJ Canada’s anniversary, as well as the address of the 2008 Tarnopolsky recipient, and the regular business meeting. Details of the meeting will be announced in the June Newsletter and on the web site.

ICJ Canada has been approached to send a judge to Ethiopia in the near future to work on a CIDA- sponsored study on judicial independence and accountability. The project requires the judge to spend three to four consecutive weeks in Ethiopia. In its June 2005 E-Bulletin on Counter-Terrorism and Human Rights, the International Commission of Jurists noted the concerns of the UN Committee Against Torture regarding Canadian authorities' recourse to immigration procedures as a means of dealing with suspected terrorists when expulsion may involve the risk of torture. The Committee also expressed concerns about the blanket exclusion of terror suspects from the process of assessing their refugee claim and about the failure of the Supreme Court of Canada to recognize the absolute nature of the prohibition against torture.
