The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) consists of jurists who represent all the regions and legal systems in the world working to uphold the rule of law and the legal protection of human rights. The ICJs Geneva-based international secretariat seeks to recruit an Assistant Legal Officer for the production of online analytical country reports documenting the state of law and actual conditions relating to the independence and impartiality of judges and lawyers throughout the world. Issues to be addressed include the harassment and persecution of judges and lawyers, interference with the discharge of their professional duties as well as structural and institutional problems that have an mpact on the independence of the judiciary. The Assistant Legal Officer will be supervised by the Legal Advisor responsible for the project and integrated into the ICJ's Centre for the Independence of Judges and Lawyers (CIJL), which is specifically dedicated to promoting the independence of judges and lawyers.
DUTIESUnder the supervision of the Legal Advisor, the incumbent will:
- Assist in refining existing formats for ICJ country reports
- Update and conduct in-depth and country-specific research on the independence of judges and lawyers and the administration of justice
- Analyse the state of law and actual conditions relating to the independence and impartiality of judges and lawyers in selected countries and guage regional trends This includes building upon prior reporting, using the ICJ's international network of legal experts, and fostering ties with other organizations active in this field. Country information will be updated on a rolling basis and in response to specific developments.
- Update and post country reports on the ICJ website
- Prepare and disseminate targeted programme materials
- Perform additional duties as required
- Professional qualification in law including a specialization in, or good knowledge of, international human rights law
- Demonstrated experience and relevant knowledge regarding the administration of justice
- At least 2 years of post-graduate relevant professional experience, preferable in an NGO or an international organisation
- Proven research and writing skills
- Ability to identify, organise and prioritise vast amounts of complex information
- Willingness to take initiative, prioritise and work with minimum supervision
- Ability to work to strict deadlines
- Good user skills for office, internet and database software
- Written and verbal fluency in English indispensable, as well as working-level proficiency in French. Preference will be shown for additional language skills (Spanish, Arabic, etc.)
- 5000 to 5500 CHF per month subject to statutory
deductions
- Contribution towards relocation expenses if applicable
