MEMBERSHIP: The Canadian Section of the International Commission of Jurists is comprised of approximately 600 judges, lawyers, law professors, and law students from across Canada. Membership is open to Canadian jurists who are interested in furthering the objectives of the International Commission of Jurists.
Our Members represent the most prominent judges, lawyers, and law professors in Canada. Among them are:
- Judges of the Supreme Court of Canada.
- The Chief Justices of the Federal Court and almost all of the provincial Superior Courts.
- A recent influx of provincially appointed Chief Justices and Judges.
- Many Past-Presidents of the Canadian Bar Association and many of Canada’s leading Academics.
- Hundreds of additional Judges, lawyers, law professors, and law students from every Province and Territory of Canada.
They are all bound together as Members of ICJ Canada by a commitment to the Rule of Law, Human Rights, and Judicial Independence, internationally as well as nationally. The demands of our careers and other obligations make it difficult to be informed about challenges to these principles, let alone to respond to those challenges. As privileged participants in a legal and democratic system that respects the principles of Rule of Law, Judicial Independence, and Human Rights, our Members feel strongly that we are called upon to do “something” to support them internationally. Merely becoming a Member of ICJ Canada is doing something.
EXECUTIVE: Responsible for the ongoing administration of ICJ Canada.
COUNCIL: Provides advice and guidance to the Executive. Members of Council also undertake special assignments.
COUNCIL EMERITUS: Have served with special distinction as Council Members in the past.
LAW SCHOOL REPRESENTATIVES: Provide liaison with Law Students and work with local ICJ Community organizing events.
